Data Sources and Template

Software Inventory Manager (SIM) enables rapid and flexible ingestion of software inventory data from virtually any discovery tool or data source. This guide outlines the minimum data requirements, usage of the import template, supported tooling, and available real-time integration options.

🧰 Compatible Discovery Tools

SIM is tool-agnostic, meaning it supports data from any source that outputs the required fields. Below are some of the most common tools used for software discovery and inventory:

  • Microsoft SCCM / MECM

  • Lansweeper

  • ServiceNow Discovery

  • Tanium

  • Ivanti Endpoint Manager

  • BigFix Inventory

  • CrowdStrike

  • ManageEngine Endpoint Central

  • Microsoft Intune

  • Jamf Pro

  • PDQ Inventory

  • PowerShell / WMI scripts

  • Ansible / Puppet / Chef / SaltStack

  • Spiceworks Inventory

  • Qualys IT Inventory

  • Rapid7

💡 If your tool isn’t listed but can export the four required fields, you can use it with SIM.

The template can be downloaded here.

The SIM template contains four required columns:

    Column Name Description
device_name Name of the device the software is installed on. If device name is sensitive or irrelevant, you may spoof this with any unique/random identifier.
software_name The raw name of the software, exactly as reported by your discovery tool.
software_version The full version string as captured during discovery (e.g., 10.3.1, 2022 R2).
software_publisher Publisher or vendor name (e.g., Microsoft Corporation, Oracle).

    ⚠️ Important:

Complete the template by filling in the data section below line 8:

Remove all example data included in the template before submission.

    Ensure column headers remain unchanged

    Tips for Submission

    • Do not filter or exclude entries manually. Submit the full export, including agents, drivers, or system software — SIM will automatically filter and normalize the data.
    • Ensure consistent formatting. Values should be raw, exactly as reported by your discovery tool.

Once completed, save the file as a .csv and upload it through the SIM interface. The platform will handle normalization, enrichment, and prepare the data for reporting and licensing optimization.

    🔄 Real-Time Integration

For those who prefer automated ingestion over static uploads, SIM also supports real-time integrations via API.

For example, we’ve built a direct, automated integration with Lansweeper Cloud, allowing SIM to continuously ingest live software inventory without user input.
